Oasis in Central Park Updates

Hi Di Hi Oasis in Central Park Families!
With so many great moments, fantastic stories, and new friendships, it's hard to believe there are only 3 weeks left of camp! As campers start to depart for family vacations and our groups decrease in size, we at Oasis in Central Park wanted to keep you up to date on any changes you may see.
· Grouping: with a decrease in campers, we will be condensing groups. Existing campers will stay with their current group members, but will have an addition of campers to their groups. Because of this, we have renamed our groups to avoid confusion. You will be receiving a separate communication specific to your camper's grouping.
· Staff: we have several staff members who will be departing for college orientations and move-ins, and we wish them much academic success. We will maintain our staff to camper ratio, however, some of our staff members may need to transition to another group.
· Contact Info: with the condensing of groups, you may have a new point of contact for any needs. This will be communicated to you in a phone call, so please be sure to check those messages!

We look forward to 3 more weeks of exciting activities, laughter, and friendships. Please remember to contact our Central Park Office if you are interested in our Extension Week August 24th-28th at (646) 698-1800. As always, please feel free to call or email us with any questions.

Instructor Highlight- Kalem ("KP")

Kalem is our very talented, very tall Basketball instructor here at Oasis in Central Park. Originally from Louisiana, he is a graduate of Northwestern State University where he played on his school's team while also majoring in Business. Besides basketball, Kalem also loves numbers. Kalem's sessions consist of skill building and teamwork, as well as games like Basketbowl, Knockout, and Steal the Bacon.

Get to know some of your Hi-5 Instructors!

Melody is our Sports instructor for Hi-5. Melody modifies sports like soccer, softball, and kickball into fun and easy ways your camper can understand. Melody ensures that all campers feel like they are winning by giving hi-fives instead of points. Her sessions help develop skills your camper may not have noticed before, as well as develop teamwork and confidence.

Jean is our Art instructor for Hi-5. She instills in the campers knowledge of various artists that are legendary in the art world. The campers are also able to be creative and express their interests using different forms of media.

Sam, our Outdoor Education instructor, has developed her sessions to include diverse topics such as animals, nature, and outdoor activities. She incorporates several games and plenty of imagination in her lessons to ensure that campers have a great time while they learn.

Instructor Highlight- Kaylyn

Kaylyn is our very talented Drama Instructor for Divisions 1 through 5. Campers are able to engage in dramatic activities that aid in teamwork, communication, and creative expression. Activities range from improv games to the building of acting skills, and of course, fun is always involved!

Oasis in Central Park is proud to present to your campers "Chiptime" with Matthew Chipman. Chipman is a 6 year summer camp veteran with an amazing array of talents. Chiptime can include any of the following activities- magic tricks, sports, games, treasure hunts, rescue missions, improv games, obstacle courses, riddles, jokes, juggling, running and screaming, parachute games, and any other activities Chipman may have up his sleeve

Instructor Highlight: Nyron Blake

Nyron Blake is our incredible Outdoor Education Instructor for Divisions 1 through 5. Born in Jamaica, Nyron loves the U.S., is a graduate of Medgar Evers College (Childhood Education), and will begin his Masters program in the fall for Early Childhood Education. His Outdoor Education instruction focuses on allowing children to explore nature in fun ways, while learning and protecting our environment. In his free time, Nyron enjoys reading and writing, basketball, and travelling. His favorite food is anything Jamaican, his favorite song is One Love by Bob Marley, and his favorite animal is a crocodile.

Carnival this Friday!!

Tomorrow our Oasis campers will experience our Oasis in Central Park Carnival! Carnival includes exciting activity booths ranging from bean bag toss, wheel barrel racing, sponge throw, as well as clowns, magicians, face painting, tattoos, and much more! Prizes will be won! Fun will be had!
Divisions 3,4, and 5 will enjoy Carnival 3rd activity, followed by group games and popsicles.
Hi-5, Divisions 1 and 2 will enjoy Carnival 4th activity, closing out the day with popsicles.

Hi-5 Trip and Activity Schedule for Friday, July 17th

Our Hi-5 groups will be heading to Belvedere Castle tomorrow morning for a tour of the Nature Conservancy exhibit and some magical stories!

They will return to their lunch area at 12:30pm, and after lunch they will enjoy swim- then end the day with Carnival!

Reminders Regarding Registration, Arrival, and Dismissal

Our program begins at 9AM and ends at 5PM. You may drop off your child as early as 8:30AM and pick up by 5:30PM. If you need to drop off your child prior to 8:30am, please contact our office to sign up for Early Drop Off. Additionally, if you are unable to arrive by 5:30pm, you can also sign up for Late Stay. If you are not registered for Late Stay and arrive after 5:30pm, the additional fee is $1.00 per minute.

Campers will be dropped off and picked up at the following locations:
PS 84 (32 West 92nd Street): Hi-Five through Division II
ARS (3 West 95th Street): Division III and IV
Crenshaw (1 West 96th Street): Division V and Teen Travel

If your child is going to be late or will not be coming to camp, please call the general office to let us know immediately. Any child arriving late must be accompanied by their parent/guardian and be signed in at the camp office (3 West 95th Street). The child will then be taken by a staff member to meet his/her group. ** Please note, that there will be no reimbursement for absent days and we do not allow make-up days**

Changes to enrollment: Please note that any changes to registered weeks need to be made one week in advance.

Change in pick up person: If someone is picking up your child that is not on the Child Release form, we need to receive the name of that person in writing via email or fax. *Please note-- a photo ID is required when picking up campers.

Early Pick Up: If you wish to pick up your child early, please notify the site office by 10:00am on the day prior by phone (646-698-1800) or email at centralpark@oasischildren.com . Early pick up times are scheduled around your child’s activity schedule (1:30pm, 3:00pm), so please be aware that if your child needs to be picked up at 2:30pm, they will leave their group at 1:30p after lunch. This is for safety and logistical purposes, as our activities may be spread out and we do not wish to pull your child in the middle of an activity.You must sign your child out directly from the office. An Oasis staff member will escort the camper from their activity to the office to meet you. *Please note - Early pick up is not possible on days your child is on a field trip.

Pick Up Times: as a reminder your child’s last activity does not end until 4:30pm. After last activity we have our closing ceremonies, therefore your child will not be at their pick up location until 5:00pm.

Update on Trips

A quick update on this week's trip to Hudson River Park @ Pier 66.
Upon arrival earlier this week, our buses were not allowed to pull directly up to the site. This then required us to move our camper's across the West Side Highway. As both physical and emotional safety is our top priority, we made the decision to forego this trip.
Our Division Leaders have done a great job creating a back up plan to ensure a safe and fun trip. We thank you for your understanding and patience.

Visiting Camp

Hi Di Hi Oasis Families!
A quick reminder regarding visiting camp.
Parents are welcome to visit Oasis at any time after your camper's first week of camp. We do encourage you to allow your child to adjust to the program before visiting. When you visit, you must come dressed to participate in all activities planned for the day- that’s the Oasis way! If you are going to visit, please be sure to call our camp office a day in advance and also be sure to sign in at the camp office upon your arrival.

FIELD TRIP INFO!

With Field Trips beginning this week, we wanted to make sure you knew what day your camper(s) would be away on a trip. Please be sure your camper is on site by 9:00am, as they may leave directly from their drop-off location. Please note that children will be off site and we are unable to fulfill early pick up requests on these days. If you have not completed all forms for your camper- please understand that your child cannot leave on a trip without the Trip Permission form completed.

Camper T-Shirts

Hi Di Hi Oasis Families,
As your camper's get to know each other and the Oasis staff, it is really helpful for them and us to be able to refer to each other by name. Instead of issuing new nametags each day, please feel free to write your camper's name on their tshirt, or have one of our great Art instructors do it for you. Just let their Division Leader know that it's okay to do so.

Special Event on Friday!

Friday is our Red, White, & Blue theme day celebrating the 4th of July. Campers are encouraged to add the colors to their outfits (Oasis T-Shirts still need to be worn).
We will have an all camp activity of Water Stratego. This is a game is like human chess, and is a water game, so please be aware that your children will get wet. Please feel free to send your camper with an extra tshirt if you like. This activity will take place at the end of the day.

Update on Rock Climbing

The Central Park Conservancy will be removing the wall hooks from the rock climbing wall due to budget cuts. Because of this, our Rock Climbing activity will include bouldering and slack lining.
