Dear Families-

I wanted to take the time to thank each and every one of you for being a part of our family this summer. Some of you we have known for years. Some of you were new to us this summer. You are all special to us and we hope to see all of you back for summer 2012! No matter how great our staff may be, it is you, our campers and their families that are the heart of this camp. None of us could ask for a better group of kids...your kids! We will miss you over the next ten months while we work hard to make 2012 even better than 2011. Afternoon activities were moved inside today due to the extreme weather. We still had a blast and at least it cooled off!!

What's Going on Around Camp this Week...

MUSIC THROUGH THE DECADES! The decades theme continues as each division picks a favorite song from their decade and performs it for the entire camp on Friday. Our summer production of Charlotte’s Web will open the show!

DRAMA: Channeling the rock greats, campers will build an interpretive story based on popular musical performers over the decades.

MUSIC: Continuing to prep their sing-a-longs for Friday, campers are practicing singing and dancing their way through the decades!

COOKING: Campers will be making Hummus with Chef Babs this week, continuing their tour of foods from around the world!

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: Campers will develop their understandings of local ecosystems as they create their own terrariums.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT: Gymnastics, yoga, and dance, oh my! Campers will be working in teams to create shapes and animals.

DANCE: When your kids get home ask them to show you the Disco, Michael Jackson, or the Jerk, as we are continuing to practice our dance moves throughout the decades.

Heads Up!!

We have been experiencing a little bug that has been going around campers and staff at camp. Please keep an extra close eye on your camper. Watch for unusual crankiness/crying, check their temp regularly and please, please, please, if your camper does have a little something, keep them home for the day. I have been sending home staff that shows up with symptoms, so please know we are doing everything to minimalize this little summertime bug.

What's Happening Around Camp This Week?

THEME: Dance, Dance, Evolution: Each division will take on a different decade. Talking and learning about your decade during the week, we will have an All Camp dance party reflecting the popular dances of the decades on Friday!

DRAMA: Campers will do the Color Dance game, which teaches choreography and blocking, helping them to prepare for Charlotte’s Web.

ARTS & CRAFTS: Campers will be making finger puppets and then having a puppet dance party!

COOKING: Chef Babs and the kids will be cooking up Broccoli and Carrot Empanadas in the kitchen. Yum!

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: This week campers will be Letterboxing! Letter boxing means hiding containers in the environment and then using compass skills and leave their team symbols in the letterbox so other teams who find the letterbox know who was there first.

DANCE: Careitha and the kids will be working on different dances in each division based on their decade, so kids will be ready to bust a move on Friday at the All Camp Dance Party.

MUSIC: Children will explore how different music was a part of daily life and culture throughout the years. Groups will explore music from their division’s decade and learn to sing a song from that time as well as movement to that music.

WEEK 4: EVERYBODY FITS

This week’s theme “Everybody Fits” teaches campers that they

all are an important part of the camp community.

Get ready to show it off at the Friday Talent show.

Friday dress for Mismatch day.

Outdoor Education: This week campers will make their own compasses and learn to navigate in Central Park.

Music: Children will explore how different musical elements fit together to create a musical composition. Groups will create individual pieces that will then be combined into a group composition.

Drama: Campers are practicing for this week’s Talent Show and reviewing acting concepts from the previous weeks.

Arts & Crafts: This week’s craft is book making. Ali will be showing kids how to bind their own journals to take home.

Martial Arts: We will review our Tae Kwon Do drills from last week as well as learning new punches.

Cooking: Babs will be cooking up some Couscous with the kids this week for a delicious, healthy snack.

Dance: Campers will combine popular creative music and dance with traditional African steps.

Creative Movement: Work on your Cat/Cow and create your own new move in Creative Movement class.

Tomorrow, due to the extreme heat ALL regular planed programming during the afternoon will be suspended in place of water games. For those scheduled to swim you will receive an extended swim period with extra free swim.

For the BOBCATS we will not swim BUT first period will be spent in the water areas of the playgrounds at 93rd & 96th Street. It may be a good idea to send them in their swim trunks or sport shorts that dry easily. We will also have water games in the afternoon.

We will still close the day with our all camp scavenger hunt, but many stations will include water! The day will end with ICE POPS for everyone!!

Yes, it's going to be HOT, but we're ready. The kids are going to be safe and have FUN FUN FUN!

What's Happening Around Camp This Week?

THEME OF THE WEEK: THE FIFTH ELEMENT
Earth, Air, Water, and Fire are the four elements but YOU are the fifth element! As Campers go to the Brooklyn Bridge Ecology Park for their field trip this week they will reflect on how they can be active environmentalist. Start getting ready for the All Camp Elements Scavenger Hunt on Friday.

MARTIAL ARTS: This week in martial arts we continue to work on our basic moves and stances but are getting creative as we mimic some of the characters from the movie Avatar.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT: How would you do a Sun Salutation under water? Just ask one of our kids to show you! Ana is working with yoga and gymnastics to reflect the four elements.

DANCE: Get ready for some moving! This week’s dance class has campers adding on to what they learned last week to build their performance and confidence as dancers.

MUSIC: Ssshhhhhhhhh… Listen for the music found in the woods as the campers go for a nature walk in Central Park.

ARTS & CRAFTS: The campers are creating collages base on the elements. At the end of the week the collages will be displayed together as a mosaic quilt of elements at the all camp event on Friday.

DRAMA: This is the first week of rehearsal of Charlotte’s Web! Campers will continue working with different modes of storytelling and performing while becoming comfortable in the spotlight and learning how to take charge.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: Always keeping ‘em dirty - Dre took on the element of Earth this week as she teaches the kids how to compost (and she brought in a few worms to help her out).

COOKING: Hot pies on a Stick -mmmmmmmmmm…. Need we say more.

In BASKETBALL, SOCCER & SOFTBALL we continue to hone our skills and experience instructional play!

Peridance Capezio Preview Comes to Central Park

Over the next two days (Wednesday 7/20 & Thursday 7/21) the folks who will be running the dance camp which begins next Monday will be doing a preview of the experience for all of our UPPER CAMP campers. If you camper is a Cheetah, Puma or Panther please let your Division or Group leader know that your camper would like to participate. Certain Divisions are being allotted certain times and we want to make sure that anyone who is interested gets a shot. You or your camper simply needs to let their DL or GL know in the morning if they are interested.

We take the heat seriously!

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you personally how seriously we take the severe heat that the City is facing this week. It hit 95 degrees in CP yesterday, and looks to be getting even hotter by the end of the week. We absolutely have a heat contingency plan in place and will use it every day this week and all summer long until this heat breaks.

Highlights of our heat plan include:

All Divisions on campus receive an extended swim period.
All afternoon classes that do not usually take place in the shade (tennis, softball) are either cancelled or modified to be able to take place in a shaded area. All other activities remain the same, but are moved into shade. Activities that require strenuous activity from the campers have water and rest breaks every 15 minutes.
All activities that take place the last period of the day include water games in some way, either at the beginning, end or throughout the period.
Extra time is taken between activity periods for extra water and rest times.
All passive group activities such as lunch stay in the shade.

With any luck we will catch a nice cool breeze like we did last week and the weather will not seem so hot! Either way we are more than prepared to beat the heat! Lions and Tigers and Lice...oh my!

It has come to our attention that one of our campers was found to have lice on Saturday. We have checked the specific group that the camper was in, and our medical staff will continue to give periodic lice checks throughout the day and week. If you find your camper to have lice please refrain from sending them to camp and notify the office immediately. Thank you for your cooperation.

Lions Field Trip

Brooklyn Bridge Ecology Park

This week the Lions, Cheetahs, Pumas and Panthers will be going to the Brooklyn Bridge Ecology Park. They will be conducting fun and educational ecology experiments with the nature in the park. In one of the experiments they will be collecting water samples and their feet may get wet. We encourage you to send your campers on the day of their fieldtrip in water appropriate shoes. YES, unlike normal days at camp your camper may wear Crocs, Keens or other safe sports sandals. Please no flip-flops. THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you to all of our friends and family who attended Passport to Camp on Friday. It was a wonderful sunny afternoon and I know the campers loved having their loved ones at camp with them. For those of you who couldn't make it, no worries, our talent show is in just two short weeks. More details coming soon!

HAPPENING AROUND CAMP THIS WEEK

IT'S ADVENTURE WEEK!

The Bronx Zoo is the field trip this week! Students will be apply what they saw and learned at the zoo in their classes throughout the week. Adventure week embodies the spirit of exploration!

ARTS & CRAFTS: Don’t be alarmed if your child comes home looking like a little monster - it is just their cool new face mask they made in art class!

DANCE: Practicing creative dance and formal combinations, this dance class is "hotter than hot".

CREATIVE MOVEMENT: Mimicking what we see in the Bronx Zoo this week, we create yoga poses based on observations of the animals' movement.

DRAMA: Auditions for Charlotte’s Web were held on Tuesday. All students will be covering the classic play in their drama classes throughout the summer.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: Get ready to get your hands dirty as we make paper out of recycled news papers and magazines!

COOKING: Chef Babs is keeping the kids cool this week while making shaved ice with fun fruity colors and flavors.

MUSIC: Combining music and movement students act out a medley of instruments and animals as they practice rhythm and time.

Well yes, it was hot, but we had a GREAT TIME this afternoon playing water games. I am still soaked! We managed our second HOT day in a row with lots of shade, sunscreen, water in us and on us:) We also monitored the kids closely to make sure that there was plenty of rest time as well. Honestly with the nice breeze today, it felt cooler than yesterday. We look forward to another beautiful day tomorrow!

While we will be working with the groups at camp to come up with something for the show, we would also like to showcase your camper's individual talents. Dear Bobcat Parents,

I wanted to keep you abreast on what your swimmers have accomplished at the pool this week. Your Bobcats have been down to swim with us Wednesday and have started with their water acclimation and pool safety. This all consists of getting to know the routine at the pool, meeting the swim staff, understanding pool rules, starting lessons in the wading pool to make sure we are all water comfortable. Starting today swimmers will be tested in the large pool (deep water) with their Swim Instructors and one on one assistance from Group Leaders to see who is ready for swim instruction in deep water. I look forward to continue working with your children.

Hello Parents!

I hope that you have all had a chance to talk to your campers about today, and that they had a lot of great things to say.
Day 1 went off without a hitch and we're excited to keep the good vibes going. For those of you who do not already know, my e-mail address is lukemohatt@gmail.com. A Note About Shoes

I understand that there has been a lot of questions about shoes for our campers this year, so let me clarify and explain.

We are asking that all campers wear athletics sneakers with socks this summer. We are asking that you NOT send your camper in athletic sandals such as Keens of Tevas and absolutely no Crocks.

WHY? Every day your camper comes to Oasis in Central Park they will be involved in activities such as basketball, soccer, dance or creative movement (gymnastics) that anything other than athletic sneakers will simply not work. We also have activities such as Outdoor Adventure which will bring our campers into some of the most natural (wild) area of the Park. We would not want your camper to get rocks, twigs or other debri to get caught in their feet.

Please understand that this is for the comfort and safety of your camper. Thank you for your cooperation in this!

HEROES WEEK!

During week one of camp we will be exploring the concept of HEROES with our campers. We want the campers to think about who the HEROES are in their lives. Help us get the campers thinking about this by talking about HEROES at home!

While it is fun to imagine Captain America and Optimus Prime, who are the REAL HEROES in the world today? If you could come up with your own HERO to help the world what would they do?

We will cap off this wonderful week of HEROES with HERO dress up day on Friday, so help your camper start planning their costume today!

I can't wait to see the amazing HEROES that our campers invent!

After braving over an hour of rain, thunder and lightning (at 5:30am) 20 or so brave Oasis campers and their dedicated parents were treated to a spectacular concert by the one and only Selena Gomez. What an amazing morning (wet or not!!)

In cooperation with the producers of the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series in Central Park Oasis will be attending several events this summer...so stay tuned for details!

What should my child bring to camp every day?

First and foremost PLEASE label everything you send to camp with your campers’ name!
A backpack
Campers MUST wear athletic sneakers and socks. We do not allow any kind of athletic sandals or Keen’s for safety reasons. Also Cons and Vans tend to get very slick on the grass so we highly suggest not using them.
Campers must wear shorts and an Oasis camper t-shirt every day. A light sweatshirt is sometimes nice for cool mornings. Each camper will be given 5 Oasis t-shirts.
Swimsuit, towel and plastic bag to put the wet articles in after swim. (Divisions 1 & 2 swim before lunch! Campers in these divisions should wear their suits to camp in the morning. All other campers are welcome to do the same!)
Deck shoes or flip flops are not allowed on the pool deck, so they are not necessary to bring.
A Water Bottle (don’t use the metal ones, they get hot too fast!!)
LUNCH (PLEASE pack your child’s lunch in NON-DISPOSABLE containers. Again, no metal please! Also please use as many non-disposable containers inside as well to help us keep trash at a minimum.)
Sunglasses & a Hat
Sunscreen (We provide waterproof SPF 45 sunscreen which we help campers apply throughout the day. If you would like to provide your own please inform your Division Leader and Group Leaders.)
Comfort items such as a complete change of clothing are highly suggested especially extra socks and underwear.
DO NOT allow your camper to bring any electronics or toys with them. We’re out in the heat and sometimes rain. Anything with an on/off switch should not be brought to camp. Likewise, toys such as Bakugon or Pokemon cards quickly become a distraction and should not be brought to camp.

Is Oasis a peanut free camp?
No, actually we are not. Although we highly encourage parents to not use nut products in their camper’s lunches we do not strictly prohibit it. All Division Leaders have a keen awareness of the allergies that the campers in their division have and closely monitor this.

What medical staff do you have on site?
Oasis in Central Park has a full time RN and EMT on site at all times. In addition to this all leadership staff and several group leaders are Red Cross CPR, First Aid and Epi-Pen Administration certified. Please know that our staff IS NOT allowed to administer medicine to your child. The only exception to this Department of Health guide line is epi-pens. A member of our medical staff or your Division Leader will call you if your child receives medical attention of any kind.

My child has severe allergies and needs to bring Epi-Pens, what should I do?

Please make sure that you indicate any and all important medical information that we need to know about your camper on his/her medical form. Please alert your Division Leader that your child will be bringing epi-pens to camp. Please bring 2 pens, both of which need to have a copy of the original prescription taped to them and be clearly labeled with your campers name. One epi-pen will be kept locked in the medical office safe. The other will go out into camp with your camper’s Division Leader every day.

Is my camper allowed to bring treats for their group on their birthday?

We do not allow sharing of food at our camp for health and safety reasons. We will make your camper’s birthday extra special without the treats…promise!!

Where do I pick-up/drop-off my camper?

Campers in Divisions 1, 2 & 3 (6-7 year olds) will be dropped off/picked up at PS 84 (92nd Street between Central Park West and Columbus.)
Campers in Divisions 4, 5 and Teen Travel (8+ years olds) will be dropped off/picked up at the Alexander Robinson School (3 West 95th Street at Central Park West.)
***You will find out your camper’s division the last week of June***

What if we are running late in the morning?
Regular drop off time is 8:30-9 am. If you arrive at camp later than 9 am please bring your child(ren) to the main office. The operations staff will check them in and escort them out to camp.

What if I need to pick up my camper early?

If you wish to pick up your child early, please notify our site office on the day prior by email at centralpark@oasischildren.com or via phone at (646)698-1800. Early pick up times are scheduled around your child’s activity schedule (1:30pm, 3:00pm), so please be aware that these are the only two early pick up times available. *Please note - Early pick up is not possible on days your child is on a field trip.

What if I am running late to pick up my camper?

Regular pick up is from 5-5:30 pm. Regardless of age if your camper is still with us past 5:30 pm they will be in the gym of the Alexander Robinson School.

Where do I drop off/pick up my camper if they are signed up for Early Arrival or Late Stay?

If you are signed up for Early Arrival (8-8:30 am) or Late Stay (5:30-6pm) please bring your camper to/pick up your camper from the gym at the Alexander Robinson School.

Where is the main camp & medical office?

Both of these facilities are located in the Alexander Robinson School at 3 West 95th St. at Central Park West.

What is the main camp phone number & email address?

(646)698-1800, centralpark@oasischildren.com. You will be provided the phone numbers of all members of the leadership staff. However, these phones will generally not be answered during the camp day. If you need to reach your camper or a member of the staff during the camp day please call the main office.

Can I visit my camper at camp?
YES!! Starting your camper’s second week we highly encourage you to visit us. We do not allow parent visits during the first week of camp in order to allow your campers time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Starting their second week come ready to have fun and join in. Call Milena or Olga in the office to make set up a time to visit. We ask that you give us 24 hours notice. When you arrive for your visit please come to the main office. We will outfit you in your own Oasis t-shirt. Make sure you come dressed ready to fully participate in all aspects of the program. Yes, if you are coming during your camper’s swim period bring your suit and be ready to jump in the pool!

Passport to Camp is this Thursday, August 19th, from 2:00pm-4:00pm

Parents may arrive at 2pm and sign in at desk located at 96th and CPW. All parents must receive a nametag. There will be signs with each group so that parents can easily identify the group they belong in. Once all groups are ready to start, rotation will begin.

There will be 9 stations ("classes") that all groups will rotate to. Each station will last for 10-15 minutes. After all groups have seen each station, (about 3:30pm) they will make their way to Lower Camp Rally spot for an all camp rally and performances. There will be a dance performance by the Cheetahs group, a glee performance by the Pumas group, and a magic performance by the Panthers group.

Stations include: Outdoor Education: Scavenger Hunt, World Sports: Net Ball, Performing Arts: Who's Late? (Charade-like activity), Drama: Who's In The Graveyard?, Sports: Agility Games, Dance: Super Movement Challenge, Glee: Songs from Broadway, Team Building: Camel Back, Art: Everybody Fits

Parents may not take their children from camp early unless notice is given to the Oasis in Central Park office the day before (please email centralpark@oasischildren.com). Parents must travel with their child's group AS A CAMPER. Parents cannot take their child away from the group (bathroom, water fountain, etc.). All groups will run as they do at camp, therefore all bathroom/water breaks will be lead by Group Leaders.

This Friday is our Parent/Camper Dance Event! All parents are welcome- just please make sure you are listed on the child release form as we will have a check in table where we will be checking all I.D.'s.

The check in tables will be located just inside of the park at the 96th Street and Central Park West entrance. As you enter, walk on the path to the right (south) and you will see us there! Activities will start at 2:00pm, so please plan on arriving between 1:30pm and 2:00pm to give yourself time to check in.

Activities include a Dance Contest (partner and group), Dance Games (musical chairs, freeze dance), and Party Games (shoe fits, balloon relays).
